Most people think of permanent hair removal as actually being “permanent,” however, very few hair removal methods give 100% permanent results. One such method is electrolysis. Electrolysis removes hair by the use of chemical or heat energy through the use of a needle and is found to be the most effective permanent hair removal method if performed correctly. It is not, however, 100% guaranteed and it comes with its disadvantages. According to statistics, 7% to 10% of clients were dissatisfied with their results after their course of treatment was completed. It is also expensive, and for some, very uncomfortable. It is, however, approved by the FDA.
Another method of hair removal is laser. While laser equipment is not approved by the FDA for permanent hair removal, it is approved for hair reduction, however, it may not work as well for some clients as it does for others, reducing anywhere from 20% to 90% of hair in the area treated. Laser removes hair by the use of laser light energy and is less painful than electrolysis as there is no direct painful stimulus involved.
Other permanent hair removal methods include flash lamps and prescription medication. Flash lamps, previously used for medical purposes such as skin disorders, work through the use of full-spectrum lights along with low-range infrared radiation. While effective for some, others do not respond well to treatment and it is found to be less effective on red, blonde or unpigmented hair. Prescription drugs, such as VaniqaT, is used by women to remove unwanted facial hair. It has been shown to be effective in slowing hair growth in 70% of users, however, it is less effective on those of the Black race than it is on Caucasians.
Where there is a number of options to choose from when it comes to permanent hair removal, it is important to take some time to research each method, consider all the pros and cons as well as discuss it with your physician to determine the best and safest method for you. Where the treatments may not result in 100% of hair removal for each and every person, they may give satisfactory results lasting for many months or years.
