Fantastic Dec Snow for the Alps
Saturday 28 February 2009 @ 12:33 am

Climate change and the credit crunch, these dual threats have saved the Southern Alps, at any rate for this Christmas. However it may have been so altogether polar. Ahead of Xmas hamlets in the Les Contamines-Montjoie region were cut off as snow storms rained down. Road passes such as the all important Col du La Clusaz were closed. In that location there was no power or telephones, locals were moved out to pro tem accommodation, it seemed as if it were a double of 1999.

It seems that all promotion is good promotion. La Clusaz appeared nightly on national French news. Immediately electricity was fixed reservations started to come in, attracted by the first class snowfall.

Portes du Soleil and nearby Risoul lay claim to virtually 5.5 meters snow on the upper slopes at 2300 meters elevation and 2.2 m at the end of the pistes. At the moment the deepest in the Alps. Grand Massif says that there is 4 m at the the highest point of the resort. Alas snow drifts have swept away a pylon of the ski lift which goes up to the sector. They’ll be out of commission until mid January. In other places in the European Alps reservations have increased 16% in Super Besse, Avoriaz and Risoul. Chastreix-Sancy has 99.4% tenancy and distributed a record number of ski passes last Friday. This is good for luxury ski resorts and big skiing companies.

Women Own The Holidays!
Thursday 26 February 2009 @ 1:23 am

This week we’re gonna get serious and deal with one of life’s greatest mysteries – why are almost all of the gift giving holidays slanted towards women?

I know, I know, this is gonna arouse a little controversy, especially from some of you women out there. And ladies, please don’t take this the wrong way – I still love ya’ll as much as ever, but I have to tell it like it is. Bottom line, gift giving holidays are geared towards women receiving the majority of the gifts. It’s as simple as that.

Ya’ll should know me well enough by now to know that I’m not going to say something like that without being able to back it up. It’s my responsibility as a serious journalist to support my statements with facts. So, in that spirit, here’s a list of the six major gift giving holidays along with where all those gifts seem to be going:

1. Valentine’s Day – Is there any couple alive who can honestly say on Valentine’s Day that more money was spent on the man than the woman? If there’s a couple like that out there, please write me, cause your story would make a full length column in and of itself. We all know, just by what is put on sale on Valentine’s Day, that this holiday is slanted towards women. If you don’t believe me, kindly tell me many men out there are longing for gifts like flowers, balloons, heart shaped boxes of candy, or edible underwear? Hmmm?

$$$ Advantage: Women.

2. Anniversaries – This is a slam dunk for women. Anniversaries exist solely to pay homage to the female in the relationship. Most times, she gets expensive jewelry, nice clothing items, trips, cars, etc., etc. What does the man typically receive? Usually either a mailbox, some work clothes, or a gift certificate to a store that doesn’t exactly sell male oriented items (Victoria’s Secret, for example). In fact, to no man’s surprise, this certificate usually ends up being redeemed for items that benefit the woman.

$$$ Advantage: Women.

3. Mother’s Day – I can’t knock this one at all, but obviously the gifts all go to women on this day. In fact, any man worth his britches loves his mama and should be glad to pony up big on this holiday. I know I wish I could.

$$$ Advantage: Women.

4. Christmas – If Christmas was any more oriented towards women, Santa would physically resemble Martha Stewart. But, don’t take my word for it, research it yourself – visit a Sears one day, walk through the store, and tell me if at least two-thirds of the items in there aren’t oriented towards women? I think that’s why Sears is still hanging on in the retail world. If you want to see what happens when a store tries offering a more gender balanced mix of products, visit a JCPenney’s (while you still can). They’re learning the hard way what it means to not openly cater to women.

$$$ Advantage: Women.

5. Easter – When I was a boy growing up, I got lots of Easter candy each year, so I’ll admit that food wise the holiday is a break even between boys and girls. However, what slants this one towards women are the clothes. Have you ever seen a young woman on Easter without a new dress and accompanying accessories? As for us guys, I can remember some years just being handed a new tie if I could still fit into my previous year’s stuff.

$$$ Advantage: Women.

6. Father’s Day – This is the only holiday where men rake in most of the loot. But, most wives, recognizing that, purchase gifts for their honey that ultimately end up benefiting them – stuff like gutter cleaners, new paint brushes, woodworking equipment, and the like. And guess what – all those things end up producing goods or services that ultimately benefit the woman.

$$$ Advantage: Debatable.

And there you have it – clear, non-biased proof that most gift giving holidays favor the woman. I guess this is to be expected, and is just as nature intended. I’d like to discuss this topic even more, but, I have to finish up this column right now. The upstairs bathtub is clogged, and this’ll be the first chance I’ve had to use that new super strength plunger I received this past Christmas. And guess who gave it to me?

Tips for a lasting marriage
Wednesday 25 February 2009 @ 11:06 pm

My parents gave me this advice about marriage. They have been married since the 1960s and are still happily married to each other.

In marriage, when an argument is about to blow up, remember that takes 2 hands to clap. When one party is angry, the other should be understanding and not argue back. The calmer party should try to listen the cry, the hurt behind the upset.

Marriage is a life long journey together. Not simply a boat you get on together and get off when it does not work out.

Look at the old couples who are still together after so many decades. Their love has matured from a passionate lust to a deep, lasting love. How did they do it?

As you go through life together, you are bound to irritate one another. Nothing is so smooth as the movies might want you to believe. Little things that never bothered you initially might start getting on your nerves. That is normal. Your spouse is not perfect. Neither are you.

Marriage is about love. Love is about acceptance. Forgiveness. A love that is deeper than a rush of passionate lust. Tolerance. Of adapting to one another.

All humans are tempted. Temptation is everywhere. Succumbing to temptation and having an affair could mean the end of a marriage, or at very least endangering it greatly. Always remember your spouse. Consciously stay faithful to protect your marriage.

While preparing for your wedding, keep in mind that this is just the first step in your future lives of love together.

Fashion and beauty for your Destination Wedding
Wednesday 25 February 2009 @ 8:18 pm

If you’re getting married overseas, there are a few extra considerations when it comes to looking good. It’s time to start planning your ‘princess for the day’ look!

Your wedding attire there are two main considerations when planning your outfit for a wedding abroad. You need to find something that you will be comfortable wearing, especially if you’re getting married in the sunshine, and you also need to choose something that you can transport relatively easily.

If the temperature on your wedding day is likely to be very cool, a ‘floaty’ beach dress probably isn’t the perfect choice. Look for something that will suit the environment – more of a traditional ball gown-style wedding gown, for example. Equally, consider accessories such as shoes. Pretty beach sandals aren’t the thing for walking around the castle grounds. Instead consider a high heel shoe.

What you wear for your wedding is entirely up to you and there are no real dress rules if you are marrying in the grounds of your hotel. However, if you have arranged for a religious service in a chapel or church you will most likely be expected to respect local custom and cover your head and shoulders. Also in some Eastern countries, such as Thailand there is a specific dress code. Your wedding coordinator or the relevant embassy will advise you.

Transporting and caring for your outfits when you choose your perfect dress, speak to the designer or store about how best to transport it. It may pack well with plenty of tissue paper, or could be better kept in a dress bag.

Check with your airline for advice on transporting your wedding outfits. Some recommend that they should be boxed or packed into separate suitcases. They will then be placed into the hold. Others suggest that you use suit carriers and, space permitting, they will be hung in the cabin of the aircraft. Outfits can always be carried as hand luggage but this will restrict you to keeping the rest of your hand luggage to a minimum.

As soon as you arrive at your hotel, unpack your wedding outfits and hang them up. A warm and humid tropical climate should allow creases to fall out naturally. However, your hotel or your wedding coordinator can normally arrange for your outfits to be steamed if necessary. Alternatively, hang clothes in a steam-filled bathroom which will help the creases drop out.

Hair and beauty Hair and beauty treatments can be arranged when you arrive at your hotel, or you might even decide to book things before you arrive. If your hotel does not have these facilities, ask whether there is somewhere you can visit nearby. For total peace of mind, practice styling your own hair and make-up before setting off.

You’re likely to want to have a healthy tan on your wedding day, but basking in the sun before the wedding isn’t a good idea. As well as damaging your skin, you run the risk of looking more like a lobster than a sun-kissed bride. Pace your sunbathing on the run-up to your wedding or help nature along with a good quality fake tan. If you’re doing your own fake tan, be sure to practise well in advance.

Marriage Finances 101
Wednesday 25 February 2009 @ 12:17 pm

Marriage is a wonderful thing, but planning the wedding is a difficult task. The coming together leaves many things as an afterthought to the wedding. Each has their own credit cards, checking accounts, and utility bills. Hopefully, neither has a lot of debt.

Most people do not think about finances when they are getting married. It takes the romance out of it. But it is necessary to make some sort of arrangements, or at least a plan of how to get things consolidated.

Let’s start with checking accounts. There are a couple ways to go about it. Many financial experts believe that you should keep your individual accounts. It will be easier to manage and keep track of transactions with only one hand in the cookie jar.

Open up a joint account for your expenditures. Each should deposit a certain percent into the joint account to cover your allotted expenditure budget. What is left over can be deposited into your separate accounts and savings account.

Credit cards are a different story. Each of you will probably have numerous cards of your own. Take an evening and call all of the issuing banks. Tell them that you just got married and are eliminating some of your accounts. Whichever card issuers give you the best rates are the ones you keep. They will add your spouse onto the account with a phone call and send out your new cards.

Settling your accounts is easy it just takes a little time. It is best to take care of these matters quickly, as time will not make it any easier. Some of the institutions may ask for your marriage license, and be prepared to send it. They will send it back if you provide a self addressed stamped envelope.

BT’s Total Broadband Users Be Aware of Policy Changes
Wednesday 25 February 2009 @ 10:26 am

The Total Broadband Fair Usage Policy for BT’s ISP has undergone certain changes. While the allowed download limit for the Option 2 customers has been increased from 15GB to 20GB, the price for over usage too has been increased from 58p to £1 per GB.

For Option 1 and Option 3 Total Broadband Package customers, no download quota changes have been introduced, but all other changes will be applicable from the beginning of April this year.

BT understands that customers do not want to exceed their download limits because of over usage charges, and for this, it has launched the concept of precaution emails. These emails will be sent to the customers after 80 percent of their download limit is used, so that they can plan the remaining usage in such a way that they don’t exceed it.

For those who regularly exceed their download limits, BT also plans to send suggestive emails for a package upgrade to increase their download quota to the required levels. Why not click here to take a look at Broadband Genie for all the latest unlimited broadband deals.

If you use a limited broadband plan, you may be interested in tracking the amount of data downloaded by you. BitMeter2, an Internet Usage Meter available freely on the internet is a lightweight tool that shows the amount of data transferred to and from your computer, and helps you stay in control of your usage.

Microsoft Great Plains Implementation: Collection Management – Overview For Consultant
Tuesday 24 February 2009 @ 7:05 pm

Microsoft Business Solutions Great Plains is very good fit for mid-size company and probably good budget solutions for large corporation. Being matured product – Great Plains provides such horizontal solutions as Collection department automation. The most common question we hear in collection department is how we assign problem clients to specific collection manager and how she/he works with them one by one, simply by hitting next arrow button. This is not possible in Great Plains Accounts Payable module and this is where Collection Management module comes to the scenes.

Installation

• Reg Key. Great Plains reg key allow you to use specific set of module and number of user (this is in System Manager). Collection Management module requires Receivables Management module and you need to purchase it and get new reg key

• Loading. You should load collection management from CD#2. It is Dexterity chunk file and it will be integrated the next time you launch Great Plains Workstation.

• Company Install. Utilities->Sales->Install Collections. This utility creates tables and stored procedures on MS SQL Server side
Setup

• Module. Here you set up the module itself: is it integrated with SOP or Invoicing, User Defined fields, etc

• Collectors. Here you associate Great Plains user with collector role

• Actions. In you collection cycle you can assign actions to your customers. Later on Actions could be used as selection range in the Collection Query

• Letters. You can automate your actions with sending different type of predefined letters where customer info goes into designated fields

Transactions

• Collection Management Build Query. Here you can restrict the quiry by Customer Info, Balance, Period, Notes, Action Type.

• Collection Main Window. When you are done with building the query – click on query tab in Build Query window and you will open collection main window, where you will see the range, defined in the build query – and here is the answer on the question from the introduction paragraph

Maintenance

• Check Links. If you are administrator of Great Plains – you should be familiar with check licks – it checks consistency of the tables and if any orphan or missing info is there. Shrink/Rebuild were actual for Pervasive SQL and Ctree only, you do not do these for SQL based system

Happy implementing! You can always appeal to us to help you with your system. Give as a call 1-630-961-5918 or 1-866-528-0577, help@albaspectrum.com

Zimmer Durom Hip Recall Not Positive for Patients
Monday 23 February 2009 @ 10:01 pm

Alot of people who received zimmer artificial hip used in their hip cup replacement surgeries are determining that there are negative effects that far surpass the regular expectations for recovery. These patients are experiencing a lot of supplemental anguish for lengthier periods of time, required to undergo revision surgical processes and magnified medical expenses, and losing income by not physically being able to work at their regular jobs. Although Zimmer Holdings, Inc. is postulating that that their hip replacement implant is in no way flawed and have basically denied blame for the faililng hip implants, many unfortunate people are filing cases against them and encountering settlements.

Sometime during October, 2008 Zimmer announced that it had set aside $47.5 million to compensate for lawsuits they had received. Many MD’s are not convinced that the durom cup hip implant is good to go and without problems. As A Matter Of Fact, when Zimmer offered online training to surgeons in order to instruct them what they said were more correct techniques for executing the implant surgical process, half of the doctors declined to take part. Hence, the whole state of affairs proceeds to be bothersome for all patients participating, but none more than the hundreds of unfortunate people who are looking forward to revision surgical process due to the problems with their implant not staying secure and tight in the socket.

These annoyed individuals definitely deserve some help and restitution which unquestionably is why product liability attorneys are telling them to initiate lawsuits. hip revision has been settling up with these claims. However, even if the payoff they are being offered seems like a fair amount, in numerous cases poor people are deciding too quickly and without provision or allowance being made for repeat issues if pain returns. If they don’t hold off and wait, to find out what cases are actually going to be worth, individuals may find themselves incurring alot more expenses out of their own funds when further complications return.

If your orthopedic surgeon informs you that you will need to undergo a revision surgery to correct your Zimmer Durom hip replacement device, contact an lawyer immediately.

Once your attorney determines that you have a case, be prepared to stick it out for awhile in order to get the very best settlement that your attorney can get you. Take notice of the advice that your attorney provides for you and do not rush the process including the restitution. Being patient at this stage of the case can pay off vs. just rushing the process.

Finding a Decent Job in San Francisco
Monday 23 February 2009 @ 9:56 am

Job hunting is stressful and a challenge, especially in our current economical climate, where thousands of jobs are lost each day. The major global cities are experiencing this strain on the job market the most. However, these cities also have the most jobs to offer. There will always be a need for professionals in the city.

Take, for example, San Francisco. A hub of global business activity, San Francisco has become one of the most influential cities in the world. On the West Coast of America, it exceeds Los Angeles, Seattle, San Diego, and Portland by far in terms of professionals. With many great universities within the city boundaries, and plenty of companies’ headquarters based there, it is a breeding ground for young talent.

This, of course, doesn’t guarantee a stellar job upon arrival. There are ways that you must set yourself apart from the rest in order to be considered for a position at a reputable company. If you wanted to be the top San Francisco divorce lawyer then you will need to prove yourself in law school and through internships with great law firms. If you wanted to be the top San Francisco brain surgeon, you’ll have to study hard at a top med school and get a great intern program in a major hospital. If you wanted to be the top San Francisco fast food chef, you’d probably need to speak to Mr. McDonald himself!

It is important to challenge yourself and the desire to succeed in a big city is the perfect way to prove it.

Calories Burned On An Elliptical Trainer
Monday 23 February 2009 @ 9:11 am

If you’re trying to choose between an elliptical trainer and another piece of exercise equipment like a treadmill or an exercise bike, one of the most popular questions is

‘How many calories can I burn with an elliptical trainer?’

You want to get the most bang for your exercise buck – that’s understandable. Here are some calories burned estimates for elliptical workouts – and several tips to burn more calories with your elliptical trainer!

General Estimates of Calories Burned with An Elliptical Trainer:

- 150 pound woman, 30 minutes of elliptical exercise: 387 calories

- 180 pound man, 30 minutes of elliptical exercise: 464 – 500 calories

- 120 pound woman, 30 minutes of elliptical exercise: 310 calories

General Estimates of Calories Burned (According To Elliptical Manufacturers)

- Elliptical manufacturers claim you can burn up to 720 calories an hour with an elliptical workout.

Factors that dictate how many calories you burn include:

>> Workout Duration

>> Interval Training

>> Elliptical Tension Settings

>> Body Composition (Muscle to Fat Ratio)

>> State of Cardiovascular system (regular exerciser or new to exercise)

>> Weight

>> Sex

>> Upper Body Arm Usage

Here are several tips to increase your calorie burn with your elliptical trainer:

- Build in Intervals

Most elliptical trainers offer incline and or tension that you can increase or decrease while workout out. Try building in 30 second incline intervals every couple of minutes to your workout.

This will not only push your body further and burn more calories during your workout – but it can also elevate your calorie burn for up to 24 hours after your workout.

- Use Upper Body Arms

Many ellipticals offer you upper body arm bars that you can use to build your arms muscles into your workout. More muscles worked = more calories burned. If there are no upper body arms, grab a couple of 2 – 5 pounds handweights and swing your arms while striding.

- Take Advantage of the Forward and Backward Directions

Using more muscles (and one you may not have used before) also ups your calorie burn, even after your workout. So take advantage of the fact that most ellipticals allow you to go forward and backward. Switch up your routine every few minutes to up your calorie burn.

- Break up your Workout

Experts are now telling us that 2 mini-workouts may even be better than 1 long workout as far as calories burned. Why?

Any exercise will temporarily rev up your metabolism – so if you can do 15 – 20 minutes in the morning, and 15 – 20 minutes in the afternoon, your metabolism will stay charged up for a longer time. (If you can’t do this, don’t worry – remember that a 30 minute workout will still burn more calories than a 15 minute workout!)

So there are some tips to skyrocket your calorie burn on your elliptical. Good luck and have fun blasting those calories!
